Dean Allan Brandt to Step Down

Allan M. BrandtThe Faculty of Arts and Sciences has announced that Allan M. Brandt, who led the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences with a steady hand and an optimistic vision through a period of fiscal turmoil at Harvard and beyond, will step down this spring as Dean, in order to begin medical treatment after a recently diagnosed illness.

 

Brandt will be succeeded on an interim basis by Richard Tarrant, the Pope Professor of the Latin Language and Literature, who will serve as GSAS Dean while FAS Dean Michael M. Smith conducts the search for a new and permanent replacement. Tarrant previously served as Acting Dean of the Graduate School in 1995–1996.
