View from the Field

June 28, 2012

The Science Policy Careers Symposium, held on May 2, 2012, and partially sponsored by current GSAS students, gave PhD students and postdocs a real-world immersion into a wide range of policy positions, as well as a sense of its satisfactions and challenges. Panelists, several of whom were GSAS alums, talked about how to transition from research to policy work, about strategies for landing internships and fellowships, and about day-to-day work in science, health, education, and environmental policy.

Panelists included (from left) Erin Boyd, PhD ’11, physics, the 2011–2012 AAAS Congressional Science Policy Fellow of the American Physical Society; Dana Christofferson, PhD ’11, biological and biomedical sciences, a Presidential Management Fellow of the Veterans Health Administration; and Ilya Fischhoff, AB ’00, a producer of an environmental web series and a former AAAS Fellow.

Panelists included Kyle Brown, PhD ’09, organismic and evolutionary biology, a legislative assistant in the US Senate, advising Sen. Frank Lautenberg on a wide range of health and education issues. Brown was the 2009–2010 Science Policy Fellow of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
