Intra-Faculty of Arts and Sciences Transfer Instructions for Harvard Integrated Life Sciences (HILS)

HILS students currently enrolled in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS) should complete an Intra-Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) Transfer Application if they wish to make one of thefollowing kinds of transfers:

  1. Transfer from one program or department to another program or department within the HILS network.
  2. Transfer from a HILS member program/department to another program/department within GSAS.
  3. Transfer from a HILS PhD program/department to a Master's degree program.
  4. Transfer from a HILS member program/department to a PhD program/department under an Ad Hoc committee. (Students must also file an Ad Hoc Program of Study form.)

(Students who wish to transfer from one subject to another within the same department and at the same degree level should file an Application for Change of Subject with the Registrar's Office. Forms are available at theGraduate Records Office, 20 Garden Street.)

PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING GUIDELINES:

  • The GSAS Dean’s Office requires students applying for a transfer to contact the program or department to which they are applying regarding additional material that must be submitted with their transfer application.
  • It is recommended that before applying, HILS students discuss their plans to transfer with their faculty advisor(s) in their current (home) program/department as well as faculty members in the new program/department to which they are seeking admission. While disclosure to the current program or department of an intention to transfer is strongly encouraged, it is not required.
  • Students in a HILS member program or department who seek a transfer must meet with HILS Assistant Dean John McNally to discuss their options.

Transcripts, letters of recommendation, GRE, and TOEFL scores from your original application to
GSAS, as well as the application itself, are included when your transfer application is sent to the
receiving program or department for consideration.

Along with the completed application, please submit the following:

  1. Current official GSAS transcript
  2. Two NEW letters of recommendation (preferably from faculty members who can comment on your ability to carry on graduate study in your proposed field)
  3. Any additional material required by the program or department you seek to transfer to (check with the receiving program or department directly)

Intra-Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) Transfer Application forms must be filed in the GSAS Dean's Office, Holyoke Center, 350 by December 15th. DO NOT SEND ANY MATERIALS TO THEGSAS ADMISSIONS OFFICE. There is no application fee.
