English as a Foreign Language

GSAS international students may want to improve their English language skills by taking Institute for English Language (IEL) courses at the Harvard University Extension School or the Harvard Summer School. Catalogues are available at the Extension School, 51 Brattle Street, or online at www. extension.harvard.edu. Funding is available for non-intensive courses.

The Bureau of Study Counsel offers tutoring to international students interested in improving their English language skills. Tutors do not work with students on writing skills. The Bureau has established a group of peer tutors (primarily undergraduates) trained to help international students with oral language skills. Tutoring sessions can be arranged to meet the schedules of graduate students. The content will depend on the needs of the student. GSAS will pay for approximately 50 hours of tutoring.

To register for a tutor, make an appointment to see Rise Shepsle, Assistant Dean of Student Affairs, by calling 617-(495)-1814. Her office is in the GSAS Dean’s office, Byerly Hall, 2nd floor, 8 Garden Street.

The Bureau also offers a course in Reading and Study Strategies designed to teach students to read strategically and selectively. It helps students gain a better sense of control over reading and studying. The Reading Course meets one hour per day for 14 days in the Science Center. The fee for the course is $25. Please call the Bureau of Study Counsel at 617- (49)5-2581 for more information. First-year graduate students might prefer to wait until spring term to enroll so that they have a better understanding of their workload. The course is recommended for students with a good command of English
