Steps to Degree

GSAS November 2013 Degree Timeline

June 21 – If the dissertation is submitted by this date, the student is charged no tuition and no Student Health Fee or Student Health Insurance Plan for fall term.  If the dissertation is not submitted by this date, the student is charged fall term tuition and both the Student Health Fee and the Student Health Insurance Plan on July 1.

July 31 – Spring term student health coverage ends. Any November degree candidate who makes use of the Student Health Fee or Student Health Insurance Plan benefits after this date should understand that if s/he submits a dissertation on or before September 11, the Student Health Fee and the Student Health Insurance Plan benefits will be retroactively cancelled and s/he will be billed for any medical costs incurred after this date.

August 27 – Last day of spring term. If the dissertation is submitted by this date, the student should not register for fall term.  Tuition will be cancelled.  The Student Health Fee and the Student Health Insurance Plan will be retroactively cancelled back to the last day of the prior term of coverage (July 31) and the student will be billed for any medical costs incurred during this period (August).

If the dissertation is not submitted by this date, the student must register, and pay tuition and health fees.  (Student will be retroactively enrolled in the Student Health Fee and the Student Health Insurance Plan as of 8/1, unless the fees are waived (see July 31).)

August 28 – GSAS registration deadline.  Any student who has not submitted a dissertation by this date must register.  Students who do not register will lose the privileges of being an active student (access to libraries, e-resources, buildings, deferral of student loans, eligibility for student health insurance, etc.)

July 31 – Waiver application deadline for the Student Health Insurance Plan. All November degree candidates who have comparable health insurance coverage should be encouraged to submit a Student Health Insurance Plan waiver application just in case they don’t complete their dissertation during the expected timeframe. Note that waivers only apply to the Student Health Insurance Plan and not the Student Health Fee.

September 11 – If the dissertation is submitted on or before this date, registration for the fall term will be cancelled.  Tuition will be cancelled. The Student Health Fee and the Student Health Insurance Plan will be retroactively cancelled back to the last day of the prior term of coverage (July 31) and the student will be billed for any medical costs incurred during this period (August – September 12).

September 12 – Deadline for submission of dissertation to Registrar’s Office

If the dissertation is submitted ON this date, registration for the fall term will be cancelled.  Tuition will be cancelled. The Student Health Fee and the Student Health Insurance Plan will NOT be cancelled and health coverage will extend from August through January.

If the dissertation is not submitted on this date, the student becomes a March degree candidate and fall term tuition and health fees will remain on the student account.

For terminal master’s degree candidates: September 12 is the deadline for submission of degree recommendations for November terminal master’s degree candidates.  Students receiving their terminal master’s degree in November do not need to register for the fall term.  If the student is in doubt whether a degree recommendation can be submitted on or before September 12, the student should register for the fall term.  Students receiving their terminal master’s degree in November are not eligible for fall term health insurance.
