Summer Housing

Be sure to read all of the information below before applying for summer housing.

Information is up-to-date; the online application is now available.

Eligibility and Priority

Due to construction in the North Yard and a large scale fire sprinkler installation project taking place in Perkins and Conant Halls, summer housing will be offered in Currier House, one of the undergraduate houses located in the Quad. Summer housing is open to all full-time, registered Harvard graduate students on a first come, first-served basis. Priority for housing is given to current residents of the GSAS Residence Halls who apply for summer housing by the March 20 deadline. Incoming students and students graduating in June 2009 are not eligible for summer housing.

This summer, space is very limited and there may not be enough rooms to accommodate all applicants.  If demand for rooms exceeds the number of rooms available, students will be placed on a waiting list based on their application submission date and whether or not they are a current resident.

Duration of Contract

Long-term summer housing is available in Daniels Tower in Currier House, which is located in a residential neighborhood at the corner of Linnaean and Garden Streets.  Due to the limited availability of rooms, short-term housing will not be available.

1.       For those students who receive summer housing and are currently living in the GSAS Residence Halls, the summer housing contract will officially begin at 12pm on Thursday, May 28, 2009 and will end at 12pm on Friday, August 21, 2009.  Residents will stay in their current academic year room until Monday, June 8, 2009, at which point all residents will move to Currier House for the summer.

Students who are moving from the GSAS Residence Halls directly to Currier House MUST move on Monday, June 8.  This date is not flexible.  Contractors will be entering the GSAS residence halls on the morning of Tuesday, June 9, to begin summer work.

2.       For students not currently living in the GSAS Residence Halls, the summer housing contract officially begins on Monday, June 8, 2009 and ends at 12pm on Friday, August 21, 2009.  Students not currently living in the GSAS Residence Halls will not be offered moving assistance to Currier House.

Moving to Currier House

The University will be offering moving services on the morning of June 8.  Students wishing to have help moving to Currier House should have all of their belongings packed and ready for the movers to pick-up at their room beginning at 8am on Monday, June 8.  Students who wish to use University moving services and are not packed by 8am will be term billed the cost for the movers to pack their items.  More moving details will be available in May.

PLEASE NOTE:
STUDENTS WHO ARE MOVING DIRECTLY FROM THE GSAS RESIDENCE HALLS INTO CURRIER HOUSE MUST MOVE ON MONDAY, JUNE 8.

Facilities

Construction

During the summer of 2009 the plaza outside Daniels Tower will be reconstructed.  This work will result in noise, vibrations and dust in Daniels Tower during construction hours.  Residents should expect disruptions during construction hours.

City of Cambridge regulations currently permit construction work from 7AM - 6PM, Monday - Friday, and 9AM - 6PM on Saturdays. All projects are monitored by Harvard University's Construction Mitigation Team to ensure that they do not exceed limits on noise, vibration, dust or radiation set by city regulations and that they work only within the designated construction hours.

Residents who have complaints or questions about the construction should call the Mitigation Office at 496-0857 or visit http://www.construction.fas.harvard.edu/ for more information.

Fees

All housing fees are term billed through the Student Receivables Office.  The summer room fee is billed in two installments.  The first installment, a $150 non-refundable housing deposit, is billed to all students who are assigned a room.  This $150 deposit is billed shortly after our office assigns students to their summer rooms.    Once a student is assigned a room, the $150 deposit is non-refundable, even if the room assignment is canceled.

The second installment is the remainder of the summer housing fee, dependent upon the room assigned.  The second installment is billed to all students in July.

Smaller rooms:  $1,302, second installment, and,

Larger rooms:  $1,665, second installment.

The total housing fee for a smaller room is $1,452 ($150 deposit plus remaining $1,302);

The total housing fee for a larger room is $1,815 ($150 deposit plus remaining $1,665).

Application Process

Students interested in summer housing should submit an online housing application .  By submitting a housing application, students are agreeing to abide by all rules set forth by GSAS Housing Services.

To be considered in the first round of housing, applications must be submitted by Friday, March 20 at 5pm.  A housing deposit fee will be placed on a student's term bill when a student is assigned a room.  Once assigned a room, this fee is non-refundable.  If GSAS Housing Services is unable to assign you a room, the $150 fee will not be charged.

The remainder of the summer housing fee will be billed to all students' term bills in July.

Assignment Process

Assignments will be based on a first come, first-served basis.   Current residents in the GSAS residence halls are given priority status.  If demand for rooms exceeds the number of rooms available, a waiting list will be kept for the remaining applicants.  The Housing Office will begin emailing assignments to applicants on March 27, 2009.

Special Preference

Special preference for a room may be given because of medical needs or a physical disability.  GSAS students who have a physical disability or medical condition that they believe necessitates being given special preference for an assignment should submit a letter describing his or her condition, as well as a letter from their physician, to the FAS Accessible Education Office at www.fas.harvard.edu/~aeo/documentation.html.

Students from other Harvard Schools should submit documentation to the Disability Coordinator at their School.
