Culinary Class with Dudley Chef: Learn to Cook Mediterranean Cuisine
Thursday, October 20, 5:00 p.m., Meet in front of Dudley. Tickets available at Dudley House 3rd Floor. Dudley Chef Matthew Pierce will teach participants how to cook Mediterranean cuisine. Franconia Ridge Day Hike
Saturday, October 1, 6:30 a.m., Widely considered a can’t-miss hike in the Northeast, this intensive 9 mile (9 hour) trek has nearly 4000 feet of elevation and summits at least two peaks (Mt Lafayette and Mt Lincoln). Depart at dawn on Oct 1st (6:30 a.m.). Tickets will be on sale starting September 19th at 9 a.m. in the Dudley House office and cost $25 ($30 for guests). Apple and Pumpkin Picking
Sunday, October 2, 10 a.m., Indulge in a traditional New England pastime: picking your own apples and pumpkins! We will head to Smolak Farms in North Andover, MA, departing from Harvard at 10 a.m. Smolak Farms also has a petting zoo with baby llamas, alpacas, sheep, and other animals! Drivers are needed and will be reimbursed. $5 per person, tickets on sale starting Sept 19 on the 3rd floor of Dudley house. Dudley members may bring a guest.
Tour of Mt. Auburn Cemetery
Saturday, October 22, Meet at Dudley House at 1 p.m. to go with a group to take the bus to the Mt. Auburn Cemetery or meet at the cemetery inside the main gateway at 1:15 p.m. Join Dudley House Administrator and Mt. Auburn Cemetery Docent Susan Zawalich on a two-hour walk through the beautiful and historic Mt. Auburn Cemetery. Consecrated in 1831, the Mt. Auburn Cemetery predates public parks in America and is a world-class arboretum, bird, and wildlife sanctuary. The cemetery is the final resting place for over 90,000 people including such historic figures as Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Edwin Booth, Oliver Wendell Holmes, and Isabella Stewart Gardner. Please bring bus fare if you are coming from Harvard Square (#71 or #73 bus).

Trip to Salem and the House of the Seven Gables
Saturday, October 15, 10:30 a.m., 115 Derby Street, Salem, MA. Join us for a trip to the historical town of Salem. We will leave from the Dudley House steps at 10:30 a.m. to take the 12 p.m. ferry from the Long Wharf North in Boston directly to Salem. After exploring the town and visiting Nathanial Hawthorne’s famous House of the Seven Gables, we will return to Cambridge by train later that evening. Watercolors: Perspective (with Practice!) at the Museum of Fine Arts
Date and Location TBD, 465 Huntington Avenue, Boston. Join us for an afternoon of watercolors! We will begin by touring the Around the World in Watercolor, 1860-1920 exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts, featuring work by Americans who “ventured across the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and traversed the American continent” to find adventure and inspiration. We will pay special attention to use of colors and composition as we view the collection. We will then have a short studio art workshop to use fall colors as inspiration for watercolors of our own. Writers’ Workshops
Thursday, October 6 and Thursday, October 20, 7-9 p.m., Is academic writing just not satisfying your creative yearning? Then try our Writer’s Workshop, which meets the first and third Thursdays of the month in the Fireside Room. In addition to providing a forum in which participants may share their work, throughout the semester we will also discuss and try our hand at various literary genres. This month we will meet on Oct. 6 and Oct. 20 in the Fireside Room from 7-9 p.m. and discuss poetic forms. Bring copies of whatever you're currently working on (poetry, essay, fiction, drama, etc.) for the workshop to discuss, or feel free to simply join in the discussion and the in-session writing. Writing and Study Bootcamp
Saturday and Sunday, October 22-23, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Need a weekend dedicated to your academic work? We provide a quiet setting, two days of breakfast and lunch, and plenty of caffeine. Dudley House students from all disciplines are welcome to join in this two-day period of silence and study. The cost of the event is $20, and to ensure your commitment, no portion of this fee will be refunded if you do not attend. Please sign up and pay in advance in the Graduate Office on the third floor of Dudley House no later than the Thursday before the bootcamp. Reverse Science Fair
Saturday, October 9, 10 a.m.-12 p.m., Northeastern University (360 Huntington Ave) Curry Student Center Ballroom (2nd floor). The Science Club for Girls is looking for presenters for their Show Me the Science Fair. This free reverse science fair event allows adults to present to girls from K-6th grade and their families. The girls get hands on experience with science through fun and engaging activities, ranging from the physics of paper airplanes to how bugs can help us create pharmaceuticals. We need several teams to present at our Dudley House booth. You and your teammates will be responsible for creating and displaying a 10-minute hands-on activity.
