Make the Summer Productive

Posted May 08, 2013

Director of Fellowships Cynthia Verba shares some thoughts on the blessings of summer (for a graduate student, that is):

This may be your first chance in a long while to step back and think, now that another academic year lies behind you and a new one awaits. For those of you at the stage of formulating a dissertation topic the summer is an ideal time to prepare for the application process, especially since some of the major fellowships have deadlines in early fall. Others may have already applied in the past but have not had the desired outcome. In that case, summer is an ideal time to take a fresh look at the project and get off to a new start.

For written advice and winning proposal samples, be sure to check out Scholarly Pursuits, available on the GSAS website, or phone for an advising appointment with me, at 495-1814.

Have I forgotten something? Yes, be sure to take time off for pure fun and relaxation; that’s one of the best ways to prepare for the challenging tasks that lie ahead.
