HILS Administration
The HILS Program is administered by GSAS Assistant Dean John McNally (jmcnally@fas.harvard.edu, 617-495-0616), who reports to HILS Faculty Chair Christopher T. Walsh and GSAS Administrative Dean Margot Gill. Dean McNally coordinates closely with faculty, students, and staff from the 12 HILS member programs on HILS-related matters, as well with other key life sciences and University entities such as the Division of Medical Sciences, the Biomedical Graduate Student Organization, the GSAS Deans Office, and the Harvard University Development Office. HILS Staff Assistant Matt Wallace (hils@fas.harvard.edu, 617-495-9500) supports Dean McNally in these administrative efforts.
Within the HILS federation, there are several subject area ‘clusters’, the most important of which is the Division of Medical Sciences (DMS). The DMS coordinates biomedical PhD education activities in conjunction with HILS at the Longwood Medical Area and Harvard Medical School; this encompasses the life sciences disciplines of Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Pathology, Genetics, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Molecular Pharmacology, Immunology, and Neuroscience. Of the approximately 1,100 students in HILS programs, over half are enrolled in Longwood-based DMS biomedical study areas. GSAS, HILS, and DMS are close collaborators within the overall HILS administrative structure; for more information on DMS, see the Division of Medical Sciences web pages.
HILS Governance: The Coordinating Committee
The HILS coordinating committee is composed of 25 life sciences scholars across several Harvard faculties, and serves as an advisory and deliberative body for its constituent programs, departments, and subject areas as well as for other key life sciences stakeholders at GSAS, the Medical School, and the University.
The HILS Student Advisory Group
The role of the recently-formed HILS student advisory group is to bring student perspectives and feedback directly to the HILS initiative, and to thereby advise and assist HILS faculty and administrators.
The advisory group is comprised of PhD student representatives from a variety of HILS member programs. They play an important role by raising issues, advocating for student interests, and shaping faculty decisonmaking parameters. The group meets regularly.
