Programs of Study
The Faculty of Arts and Sciences, the largest of Harvard's faculties, encompasses Harvard College, the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and the Extension School. The Faculty of Arts and Sciences, with more than 9000 scholars confers more than 2500 degrees annually and offers approximately 1,400 courses each year.
FAS comprises the departments, divisions and committees listed below. Applicants for Special Student or Visiting Fellow status can specify an affiliation with one of these.
Students wishing to concentrate their studies in one of the other nine Harvard graduate or professional schools (e.g., the Graduate School of Education, the Harvard Business School) should contact the appropriate admissions offices directly. Note that non-degree status varies greatly from one Faculty to another.
Programs of Study
The Special Students and Visiting Fellows Office always recommends that applicants select a department to which they wish to be affiliated based on individual, specific academic interests. Please note: the Government Department and the Committees on Public Policy and Political Economy and Government do not permit affiliation as a Special Student if the student plans on applying to their doctoral programs within 18 months. A few applicants each year whose academic interests are purely interdisciplinary are considered for the General Studies Program of Study.
Applicants cannot be considered for separate or more than one affiliation with a program, department or committee.
*Applicants must have faculty sponsorship within this department to be considered
