Residence Hall Welcome Events
Start-of-Year Welcoming Events 2012 for Residents of the GSAS Residence Halls
The following events are offered as part of welcoming activities in August and September. If you are unable to attend an activity, please contact your Resident Advisor about whether the event may be offered again.
Please also check flyers for additional information.
Please note that events that have a * before them are ones being sponsored by Dudley House. As you may know, all GSAS (Graduate School of Arts and Sciences) students are automatically members of the House and can participate in all events. All non-GSAS residents of the GSAS Residence Halls are members of Dudley House as well. Non-GSAS resident students must have a Dudley House Member sticker on their ID cards (see the GSAS Housing coordinator for a sticker) in order to show membership. For more information about the benefits of membership in Dudley House, please see the Residence Hall Handbook.
Dudley House extends a warm welcome to all new and continuing GSAS students. As the Graduate Student Center, Dudley House will once again serve as the hub of all GSAS student activities. You can study or read newspapers and periodicals in the library on the third floor, have coffee or a meal in the Dudley Café, play pool, foosball, and Ping-Pong in the game room, watch TV, a video, or a DVD in the Graduate Student Lounge, practice the piano in the Common Room, store your belongings in a locker, or enjoy a rendezvous with friends in the Café Gato Rojo. Dudley House facilities also include meeting space for student organizations, an office for teaching fellows to meet with students, and computer and printing facilities. The Offices of Student Services and Housing Services are also located in the lower level at Dudley House.
Dudley House is located in the corner of Harvard Yard directly across from Au Bon Pain and Out of Town News. As a GSAS student, you are automatically a member of Dudley House and have access to all of its facilities and activities. Whether commuter or resident, this is your House and suggestions for new activities or resources are always welcome.

Literary Events (General Info and Sept Dates)
Do you like to discuss books with smart people? Are you a closeted member of the literati? Dudley House’s Literary Fellows run creative writing workshops, discussion groups, study bootcamps, and other events at which linguistically inclined grad students from every field gather to read, write, and think about literature in an informal setting. We also publish the Dudley Review, an annual literary journal showcasing writing and artwork by grad students. Check out the literary program for 2012-2013 on our website and let us know if you have suggestions for literary activities you’d like to see hosted by Dudley House!
Music at Dudley House
Interested in performing? Don't wait until you are almost done with your dissertation to join an ensemble. Have fun and meet new people by joining a group now. The Dudley Music Program consists of four main ensembles: the Dudley Orchestra , the Dudley Chorus, World Music Ensemble, and the Dudley Jazz Band. Dudley House also presents graduate student concerts and other musical events. Further information about the Dudley music program is available on the Dudley House web site.
The Dudley House Orchestra
The Dudley House Orchestra is primarily made up of students from the Harvard Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. In addition to students from GSAS programs, we also welcome affiliates of other graduate schools, undergraduates, and members of the Cambridge and Greater Boston communities. At the core of our mission is the belief that professional life should not preclude the creation and enjoyment of music at the highest level. During the academic year, we meet for rehearsals on Sunday evenings at Dudley House and present two concerts in Paine Hall or other locations. In addition, we hold chamber music concerts at Dudley House in January and/or June, and participate in other community events. Auditions will be held in late August, our concert will be in November in Paine Hall. Our first rehearsal will be on Sunday, September 9, 6:30-9 p.m. in the Main Dining Room. . with any more questions. Elizabeth Craft, Dudley Chorus Conductor.
The Dudley House Jazz Bands
Join the Dudley House Jazz Bands in another great year of swinging at Dudley! The two groups, the smaller Dudley Jazz Combo and the Dudley Jazz Orchestra, rehearse on Wednesday evenings when classes are in session, and perform a concert each semester, often featuring guest artists or specific composers. The Dudley Jazz Orchestra also plays for the Spring Swing dance during the second semester. It is possible to play in both groups, especially if your instrument is in high demand.
Auditions will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, August 29 in the Dudley House Common Room. Please be prepared to play a jazz standard from the Real Book and improvise, if possible. Rehearsals will begin on Wednesday, September 5. For more information on auditions or the Dudley jazz bands, please feel free to contact Sarah Politz at

.
Joining the jazz bands can be a great way to keep your chops up in the midst of a busy academic schedule, while meeting other graduate students outside of your program. The Dudley jazz musicians come from across the disciplines, and come together to have fun and make music. Hope to see you there!
World Music Ensemble
The World Music Ensemble is a small group of musicians dedicated to learning and performing traditional music from around the globe. No experience with traditional or world music is necessary to join, but any member who knows music of a specific culture can teach tunes to the group. We craft our arrangements at Tuesday night rehearsals and then play an exciting fusion at our end-of-semester concerts. In the past, we've performed European and American folk music, Irish contradance, Bluegrass, Klezmer, Romani music, Indian vocal drumming, Middle-Eastern music, and drinking songs from around the globe. Among the instruments we've played with are: harp, banjo, fiddle, accordion, clarinet, sax, traditional flutes and percussions, tabla drums, guitar, bass cello, oud, divan, setar, and mandolin. If you'd like to check us out contact Rujing Huang at

Dudley Athletics
The Dudley Athletics program gives graduate students the chance to participate in athletic events, both as a participant and a spectator. There are two main components to Dudley Athletics programming: intramural sports, in which Dudley House competes against the other Harvard houses in a variety of sports; and special events, including bike rides, hikes, and other activities, as well as spectator parties for major sports events. In addition to scheduled athletics events, Dudley House offers a game room featuring a large-screen TV and tables for pool, table tennis, and air hockey.
Intramural Sports give you the chance to compete for Dudley House during the fall, winter, and spring sports seasons. We participate in the Harvard-Radcliffe Intramural Athletic Program, together with the other 12 Harvard houses. The sports offered include rowing, basketball, volleyball, softball, tennis, badminton, and many others. The full list is available at http://recreation.gocrimson.com/recreation/intramurals/Navigation_Bar_Items/sports.
You may participate in as many different sports as you want during the year. While the level of competition is sometimes quite high, it is by no means necessary to be 'good' at a sport in order to play -- the important thing is to have fun, and the emphasis is on participation. If you are interested in helping out Dudley's intramural efforts further, any assistance in organizing, coaching, or captaining a team is always welcome.
The following sports are offered during fall semester:
- Leagues: Flag Football, Soccer, Tennis, Ultimate Frisbee, Volleyball
- One-day competition: Charles River Run
Special Events
Watch for special events throughout the semester. Recent events have included kayaking on the Charles River, hiking in the Middlesex Fells Reservation, cycling along the Charles River, and watching football games in the Dudley House game room.
Details of upcoming events can always be found on our web site: dudley.harvard.edu/athletics.

*Senior Common Room Reception and Dinner Please join us for the October Senior Common Room Reception and Dinner, where we will hear a talk given by Prof. Richard Tarrant from the Department of the Classics. Richard Tarrant is the Pope Professor of the Latin Language and Literature at Harvard, and recently the interim dean of Harvard GSAS. Prof. Tarrant served as a Director of the American Philological Association, and he is presently a member of the editorial boards of Toronto Medieval Latin Texts, Cambridge Classical Texts and Commentaries, and Materiali e discussioni per l'analisi dei testi classici. His main areas of interest are Latin literature, Greek and Roman drama, and the transmission and editing of classical Latin texts. This event is open to Dudley House members only. Members may acquire tickets from the Dudley House office, 3rd Floor; students on the Longwood Campus may call 617-495-2255 to arrange for tickets. This promises to be a fascinating conversation, and we anticipate running out of tickets quickly, so please collect your tickets as soon as you can.
