Music at Dudley House

Interested in performing? Don’t wait until you are almost done with your dissertation to join an ensemble.  Have fun and meet new people by joining a group now. The Dudley Music Program consists of four main ensembles: the Dudley Orchestra, the Dudley Chorus, the World Music Ensemble, and the Dudley Jazz Band. Dudley House also presents graduate student concerts and other musical events. Further information about the Dudley music program is available on the Dudley House website or call the Dudley Music Line at 617-495-4162.

  • The Dudley House Orchestra

Dudley House Orchestra is the graduate student orchestra at Harvard. We have rehearsals once a week on Sunday evenings from 6:30 p.m. – 9 p.m. in the Main Dining Room at Dudley House. All students who play an instrument are invited to join the orchestra! Our fall concert will be on Sunday, November 15 in Paine Hall. The program includes the famous  “Three Cornered Hat” by Manuel De Falla; the brilliant harp concerto by Alberto Ginastera with guest Hannah Lash; and the second symphony by Eduard Tubin whose music displays influences including the music of Shostakovich and  Mahler’s orchestration. Our first rehearsal is on Sunday, August 30, and sessions will continue on from there.  We’ll have pizza and soda to celebrate our first meeting together! Check us out: bring your instrument and play with us! Come to the Dining Hall in Dudley House at 6:30 p.m. on Sundays and bring your friends! Refreshments will be served. For more information, visit our website or e-mail the conductor Bert Van Herck at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
  • The Dudley House Choral Program

Please join the Dudley Chorus for a new exciting season! Rehearsals are on Tuesday nights at 7 p.m. This year we will have a concert of fun tunes from around the world (Germany, USA, Mexico among others) and a concert of Sacred Music from Eastern Europe and Russia (Stravinsky, Janacek, and Rachmaninov, among others). You are more than welcome to join us at our first rehearsal (no commitment required at that point!) on September 8. You may also e-mail me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. — Ciao! Gabriele Vanoni.
  • The Dudley House Jazz Bands

For several years, Dudley House has been hosting two jazz bands. The amazing 18-musician Big Band is playing three programs this year. The December concert, "Rhapsody in Blue," will feature evergreen Gershwin standards revisited by Duke Ellington, Stan Kenton, Sammy Nestico, and more. In the great American tradition, the Spring Swing will get you to dance until the end of the night! Finally, in April, "A Jazz Night in Paris" will delight you with Frank Sinatra's "I Love Paris," Mediterranean notes, jazzy chansons françaises, and - of course - Count Basie's "April in Paris." Our second group, The Jazz Combo, is a wonderful place for creative jazz. All musicians are invited to bring new compositions or to suggest new versions of standards. The repertoire evolves according to the personalities of the participants. With a basis of saxophones & piano, bass, drums, all instruments are welcome – yes, all instruments, including flute, guitar, accordion, Ableton Live, cello, and the one you are playing!

Weekly rehearsals take place on Wednesday nights, in the Common Room: Combo 6 – 7:30 p.m., Big Band 8 – 10 p.m. There are openings in all sections of the big band and in the combo. If you are interested as a singer, musician, or composer, please e-mail me or meet with me at Dudley House.

  • World Music Ensemble

The World Music Ensemble is a small group of musicians dedicated to learning and performing traditional music from around the globe.  No experience with traditional or world music is necessary to join, but any member who knows music of a specific culture can teach tunes to the group.  We craft our arrangements at Tuesday night rehearsals and then play an exciting fusion at our end-of-semester concerts. In the past, we've performed European and American folk music, Irish contradance, Bluegrass, Klezmer, Romani music, Indian vocal drumming, Middle-Eastern music, and drinking songs from around the globe. Among the instruments we've played with are: harp, banjo, fiddle, accordion, clarinet, sax, traditional flutes and percussions, tabla drums, guitar, bass cello, oud, divan, setar, and mandolin. If you'd like to check us out, come to our first rehearsal, Tuesday, September 1 from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. in the Dudley House Fireside Room. Bring your instrument(s) and your calendar. We'll get to know each other, drink some cider, and learn a few tunes. Questions?  Contact Behtash Babadi at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. For each session a copy of the selected book will be available three weeks in advance for pick-up in the Dudley House Library. We'll meet and enjoy a discussion over some light refreshments.

September’s book is FIRMIN, the unlikely bestseller by debut novelist Sam Savage, which tells the tale of an unusual Boston native seeking some human connections. The trouble is that Firmin happens also to be...a rat. Unable to form friendships with the humans who shun him, Firmin turns to the Boston Public Library, and to its books. Savage's novel has made a huge splash in France and Italy, among other countries, and it's likely to do the same at Dudley this September.

Copies of the book will be available on the Literary Shelf of Dudley's library, and if you attend the meeting you can keep your copy for free. Questions? E-mail the Fellows at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Friday, 9/11  *Fly Me to the Moon… And Beyond
In honor of the 40th anniversary this year of human beings first setting foot on our moon we will visit the stars together in September and explore through classic films the challenges human beings might face in confronting the unknown.  Popcorn and soft drinks will help us along in our journeys.

September 11 – 6 p.m. The Dish (2000), 101 min. A wonderful film set in a small Australian town where a radio observatory dish is part of NASA’s coverage of the Moon Landing.  As it turns out, the work of the staff of the observatory will be the only possible source for TV pictures of the historic event.  Will it work?  How does the momentous space trip affect everyone who lives near The Dish?  A lovely human study and a very entertaining story.

8 p.m.  Forbidden Planet (1956), 98 min. An absolutely classic Sci-Fi film of the 1950s. Astronauts find survivors on a distant planet….but many mysteries as well.  The first sci-fi film to use an electronic music score…the debut of screen icon Robby the Robot…a reworking of the Shakespeare play, The Tempest….and a rampaging id….this film has it all!

Other Classic Films will be shown on October 16, October 30 (spooky treats for Halloween), and November 13, and in December we will enjoy two holiday treats, our annual visit to the Von Trapps in The Sound of Music (December 11 at 6 p.m.) and a Jimmy Stewart classic It’s a Wonderful Life (on Thursday, December 17).

Saturday, 9/12
